Sri Lankan born Raj Rajaratnam received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from University of Pennsylvania and stayed to get his MBA from the Wharton School.
Prior to founding Galleon, Rajaratnam was President of investment bank Needham & Company. He spent 11 years at the firm, working his way up from being an electronics industry analyst.
Rajaratnam founded New York based Galleon Group in 1997. Since then it has grown into one of the largest hedge funds in the world.
Galleon invests in global public equity markets as well as in private equity. Galleon is focused on fundamental analysis of growth stocks as well as technology and communication companies – and like many hedge funds, it employs a long/short investment strategy.
Rajaratnam achieved returns of over 17% for 2007.
