Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia was formerly in the options trading business. From 1994-2000 he was director of research at Chicago Options Associates.

Wales created the web portal Bomis.com during this period. He went on to create Nupedia – a free, open-content encyclopedia which led to the creation of Wikipedia in 2001.
