January Barometer, Definition
The January Barometer states that when the S&P 500 is higher for January, it will close the year higher than it opened. This rule has a 92.5 accuracy rate since 1950. Yale University and Jeffrey Hirsch test the correlation of stock index prices with the time of year in the annual Stock Traders Almanac.
