Halvorsen graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy and served as a Platoon Commander on the Norwegian Seal team. He graduated from Williams College in 1986 and earned his MBA from Stanford University.

Halvorsen started his career in finance as an investment banker in the corporate finance and merger departments at Morgan Stanley.

A protégé of hedge fund pioneer Julian Robertson, Halvorsen worked for seven years at Tiger Management, as Senior Managing Director and the Director of Equities.

Viking Global Investors was founded in 1999. Halvorsen is the Chief Investment Officer and one of the three founding partners of the firm. The firm got off to a powerful start, producing a net 89% return in 2000.
