Coal Futures

Coal Futures are traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX).

NYMEX coal futures offer industrial and commercial users a hedge against adverse fluctuations in coal prices. Speculators assume some of this risk with the hopes of making a profit.

NYMEX Central Appalachian (CAPP) Coal Futures Contract Specifications
   
Trading Symbol: QL 

Trading Unit: 1,550 tons of coal.

Price Quotation: U.S. dollars and cents per ton.

Trading Hours (ET): The contract is available for trading on the NYMEX ClearPort® trading platform from 7:00 PM on Sunday through 2:30 PM on Friday, with a 45-minute break each day between 2:30 PM and 3:15 PM.

Trading Months: The current year plus the next three calendar years. A new calendar year will be added following the termination of trading in the December contract of the current year.

Minimum Price Fluctuation: $0.01 (1¢) per ton ($15.50 per contract).
