The Chicago Climate Exchange
Posted By: TradersLog
The Chicago Climate Exchange is a marketplace designed to trade credits for the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. The origins of the exchange are traced back to the CBOT’s Clean Air Committee which introduced the first spot and futures market for sulphur dioxide (S02) emissions allowances. One allowance gave the holder the right to release a ton of sulphur dioxide in a year. The CBOT held an auction for these allowances, which allowed large energy companies to hedge against adverse price movements in the cost of the allowances. The success of the Clean Air Committee’s S02 program paved the way for the Chicago Climate Exchange.
