Benoit Mandelbrot

The celebrated mathematician Benoit B. Mandelbrot was born in Poland in 1924. He coined the term fractal - an important concept in the geometry of nature and chaos theory- and he is largely responsible for the present interest in fractal geometry. Fractal geometry tries to describe the objects and shapes of the real world - very few forms can be described in terms of Euclidian geometry. Mandelbrot recognized that many shapes display sequences of motifs within motifs. The financial markets are said to be non-linear, dynamic systems - and if so they are suitable to be studied using chaos theory.
