Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA), Definition

The Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) was the first stock index developed by Charles Dow in 1884. It is the oldest index used today, older than the Dow Jones Industrials (DJIA). The index is the most widely recognized gauge of the transportation sector and consists of 20 stocks in the transportation business. While the index originally included only railroads, airlines and trucking companies are now included. Dow Theory looks to this average for confirmation signals regarding the movement of the DJIA.
